Rice Weeds, Pests, and Diseases
Weeds are a constant pressure in paddy fields. Barnyard grass, sedges, and broadleaf weeds compete with rice for nutrients and light. Herbicide choice depends on whether the field is direct seeded or transplanted. You'll need a program that handles grasses, sedges, and broadleaves without harming the crop.
Insect pests vary by region and season. Stem borers and leaf rollers damage tillers and leaves. Planthoppers and leafhoppers suck sap and can transmit viruses. Snails can be a problem in some paddies. Monitoring is key because pest pressure shifts with water management and crop stage.
Fungal and bacterial diseases reduce grain fill and quality. Rice blast, sheath blight, and bacterial leaf streak are common. Seed treatments help with early season damping off. Foliar fungicides protect the canopy during heading. A balanced fertilizer program supports plant health, but it doesn't replace fungicide timing.

Season Program for Rice
- Seed and Seedling Stage
- Use a seed treatment fungicide like Fludioxonil + Metalaxyl-M to protect against rice blight. Apply a starter fertilizer or biostimulant to support root growth. Watch for early weeds after emergence.
- Vegetative Stage
- Apply pre-emergence or early post-emergence herbicides such as Pretilachlor + Pyrazosulfuron-ethyl or Penoxsulam + Ethoxysulfuron. Monitor for stem borers and leaf rollers. Foliar insecticides with Chlorantraniliprole fit here.
- Flowering Stage
- Protect the flag leaf and panicle with fungicides like Azoxystrobin + Difenoconazole or Propiconazole + Tricyclazole. Control planthoppers with Dinotefuran + Pymetrozine. Maintain potassium nutrition.
- Grain Fill to Harvest
- Late season diseases like false smut need attention. Use a fungicide with Prochloraz-manganese if pressure is high. Avoid nitrogen spikes. A biostimulant can help grain fill under stress.
